We offer this information as a guide only. Used at own risk. Any critical torque values should be nominated by your engineer relevant to your application and environment. This data relayed from other sources as a guide not a engineering document. No responsibility is excepted for any data entry errors. Factors such as type of lubricant, stud material, flange rating, Gasket choice, tightening technique, preparation, flange condition, and sequence all are factors in outcomes. Several options are available including Impact guns, Pneumatic nut runners and High torques. This seems to differ from company to company. Generally speaking, Impact guns are used up to 1-3/8 studs. After that the pneumatic nut runners or hydraulic torque wrenches are used.
IR IMPACT WRENCHES: Un-Doing Bolting - As you would be aware there are several brands of impact guns on the market. As with all Impact guns its a trade off between weight, power and reliability. In Our experience, refineries usually encounter "undo challenges " An example being a 1-3/8" B7 stud torqued to 1000 Ft Lbs, can require up to 2,500 Ft Lbs to loosen. Heat, corrosives and moisture all being factors.
We recommend IR for several reasons. We have used them in our hire fleet for many years allowing us to monitor their performance & reliability. We are confident this product has proven itself. Its been around for years with a great track record. For un doing stud flanges the 1/2, 3/4" and 1" drive guns offer fast solutions.
PNEUMATIC NUT RUNNERS: These tools offer from 50 to 5,000 Ft Lbs for Un doing bolting. They also provide fast accurate torque for assembly. Made in the UK and 30 years in Australia Pneumatic Torque Tools are low vibration, fast and light weight.
Nutruners produce the same torque output in reverse and forward.
Benefits with reduced noise levels from only around 70 - 80db, solutions that will please the oh&s boys.
Offers upto 88 times less vibration to the operator's wrist and hands. RPM is also impressive.
The Norbar tools use a reaction arm like Hydraulic Tools so any vibration or jarring is referred to the next nut rather than the operator.
Once the nut has been loosened, the tool will run the nut at up to 30 rpm depending on the tool size.
Another benefit we have noticed during un do is the norbar tools RPM allows considerably more control. When the nut is loose, it doesn't spin the nut into the air and hurtling down scaffolding.
Hydraulic Torque Tools ( Hex Cassette Tools ) These tools still remain one of the most common tools for refinery applications the Hex Cassette link style tools. These tools offer the ultimate solution to ensure access & torque accuracy. Over the past 20 years there proven design and flexibility has seem them dominate the oil and gas industry.
Because studs on petrochemical flanges often have excess thread, the Hex Cassette tools are perfect. These Hex Cassette tools allow the stud to pass through the tool. These tools are also suited to low over head heights where access is limited between flanges.
The power head of the tool can be separated from the cassette so that other cassette sizes can be utilized. The Hex Cassette tools offer from 150 to 30,000 Ft lbs with 6 tool sizes to choose. All Hex Cassette tools can be operated as duel wrenching from one pump or quad ( 4 ) tools from the one pump.
Hydraulic Torque Tools - Square Drive - The RT Impact Socket tools are also popular. This depends on the complexity of your flanges. If your able to set your studs back leaving less protruding stud the square drive tools can be used.
The most common solution is a combination of both tools the Square Drive and the Hex Cassette. This way all angles are covered. The square drive wrenches offer increased versatility in particular for un doing tight bolts.
These tools offer square Drives in 3/4", 1", 1-1/2" and 2-1/2". Torque ranges from 140 - 48,000 Ft lbs.
The square drive tools operate of the same to pump unit which can be driven by air of 240 Volt. The Hydraulic Torque Wrench series offers a fully adjustable Hose swivel to ensure the hoses can be positioned to the safest position. The tool also features a fully adjustable reaction arm to ensure the reaction point can be used. Other reaction arms can also be used like the 21" extent ion arm to seek other reaction points. All tools can be operated as duel wrenching from one pump or quad ( 4 ) tools from the one pump
